Illustration is a bridge between the user and the product that is capable of creating emotional connections and showing complex concepts.

I loved drawing for as long as I could hold a pencil and find that it influences aspects of my design. I'm passionate about both design and illustration. Product illustration is the perfect mix of the two. Drawings within products help the user relate to the action at hand and have a deeper connection with the app. These are a few ways that illustration is an effective solution to the design problem. This also outlines my process in creating images for products. More traditional and experimental drawings are also put below.

CREATING A UNIQUE VOICE

The voice of a product can be set with the help of illustrations. Illustrations create a unique personality for the app where the tone can be displayed. A familiar visual branding allows the user to feel comfortable with the interface. The colours and the type of images used are significant. What is the app trying to say? What tone is it trying to set? This requires creating an illustration system that must be adhered to, in order to keep a consistent voice throughout the product.

Core Guidelines

core-03

Colours
Stay consistent- blue is the main colour, the others are used sparingly. All illustrations are created with flat colours

core-04

Engaging Imagery
Health care in itself may not be the most interesting topic. Engaging and simple illustrations can be used to keep the website exciting but professional and credible.

core-05

Visual Styling
No faces on the characters to keep it as neutral as possible. The images limit the use of hard corners, if corners are seen they have a rounded edge. All images has light blue textured shadowing.

SIMPLE ILLUSTRATIONS FOR COMPLEX PROBLEMS

With the use of simple images, the problem can become clear to the user. For example, Canada is one of the only universal healthcare systems that does not cover prescription medication. More than 60% of medication is purchased privately. This image effectively explains how perscription medicine has become a financial burden on Canadians- especially young people. The drawing extracts the main concept and displays it in an aesthetic way.

IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE

The images add a layer of narration and depth to the overall experience. This can help the user immerse themselves with the product. With the help of parallax and coding the illustration comes alive and helps add interest to the overall composition. Illustrations can help with storytelling and lead the user along a journey. The images allows the user to have a greater understanding of the issue at hand, and/or be led through a series of tasks in a more informative and engaging way.

GUIDING AND ENCOURAGING THE USER

Illustrations can help guide the user through the product. They can be used to congratulate the user on their achievements within an app or help them understand what may be happening if something goes wrong. The app can communicate with the user and create a connection. It’s a way to show the user that the app is there to help.
